epa00553410 Veterans of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) hold the portrait of legendary UPA leader Stepan Bandera during a rally between supporters of the Red Army veterans and supporters of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) in Kiev on Saturday 15 October 2005. The Red Army veterans object against the fact that former soldiers of UPA might receive official recognition as World War II veterans. The UPA, the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, acted mainly in the west of Ukraine until the beginning of the 1950s and had more than 40,000 soldiers in its strongest period. During WWII UPA fought for Ukrainian independence against the Red army and Nazis. EPA/SERGEY DOLZHENKO EPA/SERGEY DOLZHENKO
